The egg ones don't hatch until level 50(and comes in a random color/type, so you never know what it's going to be). The pokeball ones hatch automatically after a certain day and can't be obtained ever again so... yeah, it's generally best to adopt both.
I think part of the fun though is trying to think of a name for them without potentially being too biased. Although I like it how most of the names I've picked usually turn out very fitting =P
And it's also better if you go on a forum and post them in a signature (*coughcoughlikegaia*), you get a lot more levels that way XD
